TransMountain Expansion Project - Emergency Flood Response Fish Salvage

CLIENT: Sub-Contracted to TransMountain

AJM Environmental was subcontracted to support the TransMountain Expansion Project (TMEP) following an unforeseen flood event that impacted the Clearwater River near Merritt, BC. The flooding caused the river to breach its banks, resulting in the formation of isolated waterbodies and the stranding of fish populations.

To assist in flood recovery efforts, AJM conducted multiple fish salvages along the affected sections of the Clearwater River. During de-watering activities, AJM biologists were on site to safely capture and relocate stranded fish back into the main river channel.

Operating under a Scientific Fish Collection Permit (SFCP), AJM crews used dip nets, seine nets, and backpack electrofishing equipment to complete the salvages. All captured fish were identified to species, measured, recorded, and released in accordance with permit conditions. Species observed included Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and Sculpins.

All fish data collected during the salvages were compiled and submitted to the client to meet regulatory reporting requirements outlined in the permit.
